If you have a toddler and a balcony above the 2nd floor, you already lie awake thinking about it. Here is what every Chennai parent should know before booking a children safety net.
1. Mesh size is the whole ballgame
For toddlers and young children, insist on 25 mm mesh maximum. Bigger mesh has been shown to allow foot slips in play situations. Apex standard children safety net is 25 mm; anything above 40 mm is a compromise you do not need to make.
2. Anchor spacing must be tight
Anchors every 15–20 cm around the balcony perimeter. Wider spacing means the net can deflect further under impact — not what you want with a child.
3. Wire framing before the net
The perimeter stainless wire must be under proper tension before the net is laced on. A saggy wire = a saggy net = a bad catch surface. Watch your installer tension it or ask them to demonstrate.
4. Rounded finishing everywhere
No sharp wire ends, no exposed anchor threads, no zip-tie tails. All finished neatly with heat-shrink tubing or crimped covers.
5. When to install
Before your child starts walking. By 9–10 months, most babies can pull themselves up on a balcony rail. Do not wait until "next month".
6. Combine with a locked balcony door
The net is the last line of defence, not the first. A balcony-door slide lock at adult-hand height is still your primary control.
7. Life-of-net inspection
Once installed, a good children safety net needs one inspection per year — check anchors, tension and any fraying. Your installer should offer this as a free annual service.
